Home Builders Blitz

A good idea that continues to grow

By Tom Gipson, Home Builders Blitz national builder chair
This week, hundreds of professional home builders in 24 states are partnering with Habitat for Humanity for the third Home Builders Blitz, an event where contractors, carpenters and other construction experts lend their talents and skills to help low-income families in need of affordable housing.

In 2002, when I recruited 12 builders in Raleigh, N.C., to help build Habitat houses, we knew that we were onto a good idea, but we never suspected that it would grow into a national event. We are now celebrating the milestone of more than 1,000 families helped through the Home Builders Blitz program. I was in Memphis, Tenn., today and saw firsthand how professional home builders there are working to help a local low-income family with their future home.
Home builders understand that the value of homeownership goes beyond each individual family to the greater community as a whole, especially when considering how increased homeownership helps to stabilize our housing market. The Home Builders Blitz offers the building industry the opportunity to help provide a lasting and proven safeguard against a depressed housing market. This translates into a positive for everyone involved: Habitat serves more families, communities are strengthened, and home builders help bolster home values.
I’d like to thank all of the builders, subcontractors and other professionals who have helped so many families realize their dream of homeownership, as well as the many sponsors who have stepped up to the plate to make this event a true success.
Even as this year’s Home Builders Blitz kicks off, we are starting to plan for 2014, and we are encouraging all Habitat affiliates to partner with their local builders association and help make the Home Builders Blitz program a continued success.
