Service Honored

Two years ago, the Home Depot Foundation partnered with Habitat for Humanity International and sponsored a Veteran Repair Corp Program. Only 3% of the one thousand plus US Affiliates were invited to participate in the pilot program.

Habitat for Humanity of Smith County was one of them.

A couple of weeks ago we were happy to learn that we were the NUMBER ONE affiliate in critical repairs completed for veterans in the United States. That’s right, NUMBER ONE in the ENTIRE United States, right here in Smith County, Texas.

Congratulations to all Habitat for Humanity of Smith County staff, volunteers and donors!

Perception

We all develop perceptions of organizations, stores and people. For instance, the common perception of the Habitat for Humanity of Smith County ReStore Home Improvement Center is one of just that a “home improvement center.” There you might find gently used or new building materials, paint, painting supplies, furniture, appliances, and so much more.

That perception has been absolutely correct until recently.

Now, you can find computers! Yep, that’s right, computers. “Recertified” laptops and desktops, all starting at just $99.99.  They come with a 90 day warranty and have another 3 year warranty available. What a deal! I don’t know of too many places where you can purchase a computer for $99.99 while helping such a great organization!

Check out that selection of computers!

Are you connected?

Social Media, 20 years ago the term did not exist.  Now it’s all the rage. We have Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Google+, the list goes on. The words “tweet” and “like,” have a whole new meaning. Creating something that goes “viral” is not necessarily a bad thing any longer. A viral post on Twitter or Facebook, for instance, can bring a new level of popularity to your business or cause.

That’s the main purpose of Social Media is to bring awareness, to bring connection to a cause or business. At Habitat for Humanity of Smith County we want to stay connected to our community, volunteers, donors and peers by using Social Media. Is there anything that you would like to see posted or talked about?

You don’t tweet or like posts? No problem! There are many other great resources to stay connected to Habitat for Humanity of Smith County!

Start to Finish

As you can imagine, a new Habitat for Humanity of Smith County home requires planning. Months of planning. From selecting a family, to the location of the home, to the building materials, the list goes on!

The first day when the walls are raised on a new home, the feeling is electric. The planning is coming together to truly change lives.  Volunteers are integral at all stages in a Habitat Home.  Have you ever wondered where you could volunteer your time in this process?  Have you ever helped change a life?

Hammering, painting, landscaping, it all must be done at a new Habitat home.  Volunteers are there the entire way through.  On Melinda’s home, we had a chance to capture one particular volunteer who was able to see the entire project through, from raising walls on the first day, to the closing! Such an exciting experience, gone full circle.

Mike & Melinda

THE FINISH- The home is now complete and  in this photo Mike and Melinda are at closing.

I can confidently say,  this is a life changing, very gratifying experience for both Mike and Melinda.  Mike as a faithful volunteer and Melinda as a new homeowner.

On this Good Friday, I encourage you to reflect on what it is you can do for others.  We would love to have you volunteer with us at Habitat for Humanity of Smith County.

Our offices are closed today, but will reopen Monday morning at 9AM. The ReStore Home Improvement Center is open normal hours today and tomorrow.

Happy Easter Weekend!
